Ed Boon’s thoughts on the next MK
Comic book characters are not the future of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise, series co-creator Ed Boon mentioned this last summer at Comic Con in San Diego. Eventually, “Mortal Kombat” would return to its M-rated, violent roots.

He then went on to say;
“When we do the next M-rated game, it’ll have that much of a newness and a freshness of a first next-gen ‘Mortal Kombat,’” said Boon. “I think that element of newness is totally necessary with games, especially franchise games that have had five, six, seven versions. Without it, you see your sales slowly go away because people have felt like they’ve already played the game.”
“It’s not like ‘Mortal Kombat’ is teen [rated] forever!” he continued. “Like I said, I think when we do that [mature game], it’ll be a bigger deal than had we done it now just because, there would [only] be an interest of ‘Oh, what does ‘Mortal Kombat’ look like on next-gen? But now we have, ‘And it’s got Batman, it’s got Superman, and it’s a T-rated game and it plays totally different.’ [Then] we can say, ‘Now, back to the intensity, the gore, the over the top violence’ and we’ll probably even re-do the fighting [engine] again. I think, in the long run, it’s going to work out.”
We at DCvMk say; bring on the gore, now lets just hope that Midway survices long enough for this to be realised.
